LotR!AU  —-  Merlin’s magic causes a secondary personality to unfold

“Gaius says, he says that Arthur will loves us if Gwen was gone.”

Merlin digs the blade deeper into his arm. He rocks back and forth against the wall of his room. His eyes have become a perpetual gold.

“Gaius lies lies lies lies, he lies. Arthur loves Gwen Gwen Gwen GWEN GWEN!”

Merlin throws the knife across the room and screams into his pillow. 

“We kills her so we could be happy, because Gaius says we can be happy but Gaius doesn’t really know what we wants does he?”

“No, he didn’t mean any harm!” a gentler voice escapes.

“SHUT UP! You don’t know whats we wants, you are weak! Dragoon! Dragoon! I know what is best for us, not you!”

Merlin screams again, twisting on his bed now, convulsing. Half of Merlin’s face seems to be crying, the other half is smiling.

“Don’t worry Merlins, I will makes us happy. We can has us happy. Promises, I make sure.”

Gaius stands outside of Merlin’s door, listening to the chaos within. He doesn’t sleep that night.
