Summary: Arthur, a travelling businessman, decides to rent a room with the Wyllt family while in town. Hunith is charmed. Her son, Merlin, is not.
Without warning, the one with the braces steps forward and kicks him in the shin. Hard. Arthur doubles over, clutching at his leg, coughing out a pained sound. He’s honestly surprised at how much it hurts. The boys pull at each other to run away, laughing, shouting, “All right, Gramps!” before they go.
Arthur sits down on the snowy pavement, back against the garden’s hedge. Head tilted back and hands clutching his knee, he waits until he can’t feel his heartbeat in his leg anymore. Then he gets to his feet, ambles back toward the house. When he closes the door behind him, a bedraggled looking Merlin is at the top of the staircase, staring down.
“Thanks a lot,” he says. “Loser.”
Arthur watches as Merlin disappears off into his room, and breathes out a quiet, “My pleasure.”

Merlin turns his hand over in Arthur’s so he can open his palm and see what’s inside. He already knows what’s there but he needs to see them too.
Arthur’s dog tags.
“Come back to me.”
Arthur’s voice is a whisper. It’s kind of choked and desperate but strong underneath all of that. He uses the hands still wrapped around Merlin’s to pull him down to him. Merlin lets himself fall and he rests for a brief moment against Arthur’s side, his face pressed into Arthur’s neck.
“I promise.”

“Watch your tongue,” Arthur says crossly, twenty years old and still sore over the coach driver saying he looked awful young to be taking up as sheriff. “Now take her back to the Avalon or sober up behind bars.”
“I bet you don’t even have the keys to the jail,” Merlin says, giving the girl a gentle push toward the stairs at the back of the whorehouse.
“I do too, right here.” Arthur opens his coat and shows off the freshly minted set, and his pistol, for good measure.
“Mm.” Merlin peers at them, swaying without the girl to steady him. “Big gun.”
“I’ll tell you one more time, boy. Run on home.”

He has his friends, his art and his mum, who has to juggle three jobs just to make ends meet. He also has Arthur, who brings with him a whole new heap of problems. Falling in love with your best friend is never easy; especially when you’re living in the deadbeat rundown Holly Street Estate in East London.

Sometimes Merlin would look at his friend and see the same wide-eyed eight year old he’d met when Arthur first moved in. He’d been nervous, unsure, like a woodland creature that was startled with every creak of the building and every shrill of a siren that aired during the night. Hunith took him under her wing, as she did most of the children on the estate, forcing Merlin out from behind her legs to smile shyly at this new boy. When Merlin had fallen off his new skateboard the next day Arthur had been sat on the wall quietly watching; before he’d jumped down, ripping a tear of his shirt to bandage around Merlin’s scabbed knee, muttering “idiot” under his breath as he did so. Being Arthur’s friend after that became second nature.
